Doing Time at the Republican National Convention-Final Day

By Ron Kuby

OK.  I am officially scared.  Sarah Palin's speech did everything it was supposed to do.  Predictably light on specifics (solution for the economy--drill, solution for foreign affairs--kill), the "drill and kill" speech wowed 'em across the country.  Palin was poised, articulate, animated, and forceful.  I recognize that reading a speech that someone else wrote from a teleprompter is not exactly the Gettysburg address.  I know that it is not winning a debate, or answering questions from the press.  I realize that a single swallow doth not a summer make, etc.  But let's face it folks--she was good last nightSo some facts were wrong (well, many of them).  So she never mentioned the fact that she would ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.  She she bashed Michelle Obama by saying that Palin, at least, was "always proud of America," while omitting the fact that her husband spent 7 years registered to a political party that advocates Alaskan secession from the United States (also known as treason--google "Civil War").  These folks are not about content--they are about image.

Lighter moments included the really uncomfortable baby-dad Levi chewing gum on stage (he forget to put in under the seat), and Romney's weird timewarp speech where he seemed to forget that Republicans have completely dominated every branch of government for 6 of the past 8 years.  Also--one name not mentioned:  Bush

Sarah vs. Hillary

I agree, we all need to take a big breath and relax. There is a long way to go to the election and a lot of questions yet to be asked and answered.

Watching the fixation on Sarah Palin and her effect on the Republican base leads me to conclude that this election is now a battle between Obama and Palin. Her entrance has made McCain largely irrelevant, especially since his own voters are only lukewarm about him. Given that, anything Palin says against Obama and Biden is fair game while any comment made about her will immediately be labeled sexist. This being the case, the election gets thrown back to Hillary Clinton to win or lose. She is the really the only person who can legitimately go after Palin. And in so doing, she may be able to fully get her disaffected supporters on board with Obama. Perhaps in a twisted turn of fate, Palin will actually help to unite and galvanize the Democrats as well.

By the way, as a woman, I find the nomination of Sarah Palin unbelievably offensive. It is hard to stomach how little value women are accorded by the Republicans. I also am infuriated by the cry of "sexist" regarding every question or comment about Palin. When she stepped into the big league, she and everything about her became fair game for public consumption. If she is going to "whine" about the "sexist" media, she should go back to her small town in Alaska and run for the PTA.
