Today's TRMS
Rachel Maddow will be coming to you guys live from the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnessota! There is no Race for the White House tonight so Rachel will be on for 2 hours, 6-8pm ET.
The big stories this week are obviously Hurricane Gustav and Sarah Palin. Rachel will be reporting the latest on Gustav and discussing why and how Palin was never properly vetted.
- September 1, 2008

Oh Good.
Rachel will be on today.
What RNC convention though?

All the speeches were cancelled, but there is still stuff going on. They had some parlimentary stuff to get out of the way, mainly. They actually have to do certain things, there are deadlines coming very soon for getting on the ballot. So they can scale things back, but not delay them.

By Jason M. BryantSeptember 1, 2008 - 4:23pmI have a question
about what happens if, and how, the republican ticket (Pres and VP) can be changed at this point. Obviously the vp can just withdraw. Can delegates change their votes at this point?
Perhaps I am only being paranoid--but desperate times call for desperate measures...is it too late for them to pull a fast one?

By missdaphneSeptember 1, 2008 - 4:43pmThis question came up a lot
This question came up a lot during the primaries, when it wasn't clear yet if Hillary would give up. The rules in question should apply to both parties.
Most states don't seem to have any laws forcing a delegate to vote for who they were supposed to vote for. So technically, there's nothing legally stopping most of them from switching their vote.
The parties of each state might have rules against switching, but it's not entirely clear.
It's actually a moot point, because only people loyal to the candidate are chosen to be delegates. Romney chooses all his delegates, McCain chooses all his delegates (well, their representatives in those states do the choosing). Then people vote for which set of delegates they want, though it is made to look like they're actually voting for the candidate.
So there's virtually no chance that any of the delegates would want to change their minds. Chances are astronomically lower than enough of them would to make any significant difference.
So basically, McCain/Palin is the ticket and there's no real chance of that changing unless they drop out.

By JTGullsSeptember 2, 2008 - 1:15amPalin
Rachel; I am a fan finally posting this, and I trust you to investigate these allegations about Sarah Palin. I have been blogging in support of Obama since beginning of Primaries, globally. This is my own investigation from blogs in Alaska.
a. Sarah Palin planned this month's ago regarding the 'troopergate' incident, when Hillary was defeated and to scramble for Hillary's supporters. She was going to do this, because she knew then, in fact, as far back as January....she was going to be picked, allegedly. She planned to lie about the brother-in-law to the NY voters, so McCain would get that state, because apparently NY state has a ban on taser use and it would bring sympathy.
b. She new, according to blogs, and Cheney was advising her....several phonecalls made since January of this year, but thought McCain needed a woman on the ticket to get those votes. Apparently John McCain and Cindy McCain were all aware of this plan but thought Hillary would be the candidate at that time and the competition would be easier. Makes me think John McCain's choice for Presidential candidate was already decided by WH, doesn't it? Anyway, the blogs are furious with Palin in many firings and also her 'Gestapo' atmosphere were she also used her troopers to target individuals.
c. The pregnancy. According to some old blogs, it was her oldest daughter who gave birth to the young son Trig, and suppose she is pregnant again, perhaps allegedly. But Palin using the young grandson as a sympathy vote from other women, stating it is her own son, allegedly.
d. Gov. Palin's speech in January of 2008 (?) She said she was receiving coaching from the current V.P. of the United States.....and the blogger goes on to say "I wonder if he'll still be on the phone to her if she's elected?" from blogger rfn....."McCains people felt that the perception of opposition to spousal abuse is a good thing?" talking about troopergate again.
e. blog....."Halcro has something to do with the charge of troopergate". Aug. 31/08....2:oo pm darkdakota....."Why would he?"..."All he has to do is say that trooper Wooten tasered a little boy and at least in NY where tasers are illegal Palin would be vindicated." "No need to further investigate ....except for Palin haters and Halcro's appeasement".
f. Some bloggers felt that Alaska's fuel cost did not go down this past month and believe price fixing is going on....and Colberg (?) sent letter back to senators telling them he's having the Law's Consumer Protection Unit start an investigation. .Palin was paying citizens a gas profit tax for shut up money. Also, blogger rfn......"Geraldine Ferraro has left for St. Paul to announce her endorsement of McCain/Palin".
g. Sept. 21, 2007 blogger......"Extortion, bribary, conspiracy to impede us" ?????
"She didn't clean up the gang already done before she took office"..........Liar Palin

Rachel,
Don't know whether you have much control over this, but here're some ideas for music you could use on your new teevee show:
1) "Pepita (iso68 Remix)" by Calexico - from "Black Heart" disc. Suitably sober but also hip.
2) There's a great Radiohead live cover of Blondie's "Union City Blues." Thought all y'all with the recent Blondie posts would appreciate this one.
3) "Beulah Witch" recorded by The Buddy Rich Big Band with Matt Sorum on drums (formerly of The Cure and G'n'R).
4) "Change Your Mind" by The Killers.

By essicSeptember 1, 2008 - 9:06pmall y'all all
Since "y'all" is a contraction of "you all", I consider "y'all" to be the plural of "you". I like to say that "all y'all" is just "ignant", but I'm not sure that joke comes across without my North Carolina accent to back it up.
- Email this page
By Jason M. BryantSeptember 1, 2008 - 6:04pmWell, Jason...
...you're plain just wrong.
"Y'all" can be singular or plural. If you want to make sure you're addressing everyone in hearing range, the plural is "all y'all." As in, "Why don't all y'all come over to the house?" "All y'all" is idiomatic, not ignorant. If you ask, "Why don't y'all come over to the house," some people (especially those with whom you're not making eye contact) may be left wondering if you like them enough to have really invited them over. Using "all y'all" signals that you're prepared for a crowd at your house. See how useful that is?
These rules apply all across the South, including North Carolina. But if you're from deep hill country (west of the Piedmont in Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina, or northwest Georgia, or eastern Tennessee, West Virginia, or Kentucky), the rules are different. They are:
(a) "you" is singular;
(b) "youen" is plural (vestige of old English and its Germanic roots); and
(c) "youens" is just plain dumb, because it's a double plural, like "feets."
I've heard "youen" regularly as far east as Shelby, North Carolina.
BTW, the pronunciation is "ignernt," not "ignant." I've never heard anyone say "ignant" in my life, and I've been from Murphy to Manteo.
Admit it -- you're really a Republican from Wisconsin, aren't you?
- Email this page
By essicSeptember 1, 2008 - 7:05pmI can't tell if you're serious or joking, so apologies if joking
I'm an ex-Republican (technically still Republican, but planning to register as an Independent soon) who was born and raised in Marion, NC.
I've never actually seen the word "ignant" spelled, so I just wrote it the way it has always sounded to my ears. It was a joke anyway, not an actual opinion. I thought I made that clear when I referred to it as "that joke". When I've had this conversation with friends, I've been able to get across the idea that I know I'm being very elitist with my choice of slang.
As for "the rules" applying all across the South, I must have missed the that day in class when they taught the official meaning of the word. :)
All I said was that I consider "y'all" to be the plural of you. That's how it was used where I was raised, though I can't swear I never heard it used singularly. It does come from the contraction of "you" and "all," so it makes sense to me that it refers to a group of people.
I still think "all y'all" is redundant.
- Email this page
By Jason M. BryantSeptember 1, 2008 - 7:34pmWell, Jason, here's the thing
We're from the same neck of the woods, and I'm not here to pick a fight with you. I'm just saying if you called somebody in Shelby "ignorant" for saying "all y'all" or "youen" (as you just did, above, because I'm from Shelby), well, that would be called elitist AND rude. It's like asking Walter Cunningham why he's pouring syrup on everything on his plate, yes? Understandable if you're seven years old. Otherwise, according to Calpurnia and Atticus, not okay at all. Usually, when someone goes to pains to distance himself from (or point out) the way rural or less educated people speak, he's a social climber. But you weren't doing that, were you? I mean, when you travel to India, you don't feel obliged to point out the "ignorance" of the idioms or dialects of the lower castes, do you?
If you think, because you missed class that day, that I'm making it up, try these:
white lady, texas
http://www.crazyauntpurl.com/archives/2005/06/yall_vs_yall_vs_1.php
rapper, virginia (explicit lyrics)
http://www.kovideo.net/lyrics/t/Timbaland/All-Yall.html
Tupac also used "all y'all"
Urban Dictionary
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=all%20y'all's
I've even heard a white male judge explain "all y'all" in a speech this year. He's highly educated -- just sees no need to hide his rural roots.
And all y'all is not redundant. It's a refinement on a collective pronoun. Always means "more than three." But you know what? You don't have to use the expression, and I have no desire to make you like or use it. Just don't lecture me if I like it and use it. How's that? Truce?
(BTW, where I'm from, animals are "raised," and children are "reared.") ;-)
- Email this page
By essicSeptember 1, 2008 - 9:05pmNo. No Truce.
No. No Truce.
Because I was never fighting. You're the only one fighting.
I made it as obvious as I possibly could that the "ignorant" comment was a joke. I actually used the word joke. If you don't think it was funny, that's fine, I often fail at funny and I'm okay being told that. But please don't say that my words were elitst and rude, then offer me a truce as if I was fighting with anyone.
- Email this page
By Jason M. BryantSeptember 1, 2008 - 9:16pmI dunno, Jason
Maybe I'm wrong about you. After all, all I know about you is what you reveal on the blog. I just think you seem to talk down to people an awful lot here. And I kept my opinion to myself until you "corrected" me on contractions -- in a fleeting conversation -- that I was having with someone else.
As I said, maybe you're a great guy. Maybe we'd enjoy having a beer sometime. Maybe it's all in the inflection and tone that gets lost on the 'net. But from the very little bit I've seen here on the blog, it sure seems like you enjoy correcting people and, once you sink your teeth in, you just can't let go.
So, Sport, how about let's start over? I mean, this has definitely become a tempest in a teapot, and it's really not any fun at all -- for me or, I'm sure, for anyone else on the blog. So, I'll accept that you were making a joke this time, and I just didn't get it. How does that sit with you?

Here I am again, but I have so much Rachel that has been noted, so I'll continue......
h. Aug. 14, 2008 blog; "NOW EVERYBODY KNOWS what we are dealing with in Wasilla". "Diane Keller was trained by Palin, Palin was her mentor.....Palin just was a tad smarter and lasted longer than Keller." " Now it's all in the open and they both busted for Gestapo ways......" "Now, let's get this embarrassment out of office." "Imagine how McCain feels right now". "Probably like a jackass for even considering a woman".
i. Charlie Crist of Florida apparently recommende Palin last year and so did Karl Rove and Newt Gingrich. But they thought Hillary was going to trump Obama at that time. So they conjured this plan month's ago to defeat Hillary, then Obama when he was leading and eventual win. They new they had to emasculate Obama to win.

"Got Walt Monegan fired". "Palin is an idiot" . "Governors abuse of power".....classless". "PSEA contract forced upon them by the governor Sarah Palin". "Emails, check". "lack of aptitude for the job and absence of statesmanship, lack of judgement".
"Blames a staffer for her problems and failed to say it was her responsibility and not offer an apology to Monegan" ....."gave $10,000 to Monegan". "self-preservation.....incompetent". "trying to buy votes with energey policy to get elected". "Keep Bailey quiet for Palin......cost?"
"The landscape is littered with the bodies of those who crossed Palin"......"Check out Frank Bailey Van Palin". "Alaskans calling for her resignation".

By nativegirlSeptember 1, 2008 - 5:56pmYou know, if you control the vote count...

I am very happy to see that Gustav weakened and the damage was not as bad as feared. Having said that I am in no way fooled by the reaction of the republicans and how they have essentially pulled out of the "convention competition" to avoid the comparison with the democrats and the inevitable failure to compare. I think they saw what the democrats achieved and to save face decided not to play the game. This was simply Michael Johnson pulling up with a muscle injury in the big race when he thought he was going to lose.

Wow, that was an interesting article.
So the "tasering his son" actually sounds like a story about two rednecks fooling around. The son thought the taser was neat, the dad used it on hi in a (somewhat) safer way than normal, then the son asked him to do it again. A little reckless, but no intent to harm the child and no real harm done.
This is all getting really confusing.

Yup, this is typical "spin". All you heard about this troopergate, even from RM herself was the line, "well if he tasered his son and beat his wife, maybe this will be positive for Palin". RM needs to read this story. I hope she reads her blog.
By the way, it is funny you mention "redneck". Wasilla is the redneck capital of Alaska. It is also the Meth Capital. Why if she was such a good mayor was there such a bad meth problem in Wasilla?

Not impressed. Didn't read the comic book...excuse me, "graphic novel".

I never read the "graphic novel" either but I thought the movie was great, both in content and style.

By Polly Tics (not verified)September 2, 2008 - 12:34pmpreggers for palin teen
Why is this teen/family/governer suddenly so special for "keeping the baby"? Thousands of families do it every day...does anyone recall the movie JUNO?...or, conversely, the criticism of Jamie Lynn Spears? Conservatives preach abstinence to prevent pregnancy...someone should ask Smiley Sarah what her position is on that. How is NOT aborting babies suddenly so heroic? I bet if Sarah was a single mother on food stamps her decision would have been different. Too bad she wants to outlaw that right for her non-married "sisters". Bottom line, there are plenty of white, non-college educated, low-income voters who look at McCain-Palin and see "MILF with an old dude" and Obama-Biden as "those guys are gay"...we all know how the local mechanic reacts to a MILF...

By natashSeptember 1, 2008 - 7:21pmConservative Values?
I thought the Dr. Laura, conservatives believed it was necessary to stay at home to take care of your children until at least high school if not college? What does it say about conservatives who back a VP who has a disabled child and has a full time job as Governor and maybe VP and a husband who works the Oil Pipeline?

By akguySeptember 1, 2008 - 7:29pmMy take on Palin
I think this whole VP thing is one of those "Look over Here!" tactics the repugs are so good at creating. What ever is being cooked up is neatly covered up by this Palin business! You gotta know McCain isn't running this campaign and the Palin decision wasn't his...this wreaks of Rove. The way the media is paying total attention to the story, which gets embellished daily, what with the daughter now, is just as planned. They can milk this for a couple more weeks, mean while could be voting lists are getting altered, machines getting rigged, etc., etc.
I don't mean to sound paranoid, but history has shown to their way.

By Grumpy NorwegianSeptember 1, 2008 - 7:24pmA similar thought
OK, not the paranoia part, but the attention-grabbing part. By this pick and all the media attention being paid to the unknown SP, they have successfully squashed the effect of the DNC, taken away attention from Obama/Biden, AND have managed to keep McCain away from further scrutiny. As Rachel has pointed out, too much attention on McCain and his flubs, inconsistencies, etc, would be bad for McCain. So, the strategy is to take away spotlight from Obama, put it on the McCain campaign in general, but not specifically on McCain.

Rachel waxing nostalgic led me to say, "Nooooo!" Think about it from the *teacher's* (i.e., my) perspective. Gross. Ew. Student crushes - every teacher's biggest fear. Skeeves me out.
Oh yeah, the semester starts tomorrow. Thanks a ton.

By NJSharonSeptember 1, 2008 - 11:31pm9/1 show: Iraq editorial/report source
During the "News from Iraq and life during wartime" segment, Rachel mentioned a report or editorial that made the case for how/why the US should stay in Iraq indefinitely to secure oil supplies.
Does anyone have the author/title/link to that?
Thanks!

Who knew that sumo wrestling had a drug problem?
ca.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idCAT12793120080902
Two Russian sumo wrestlers tested positive for marijuana in tests on Tuesday, a Sumo Association spokesman said, less than two weeks after another Russian was arrested and then fired over suspected possession of the drug.

New "90210" returns tonight - 2 hours of inane, stupid, (dare I say) fun on the CW. Yes, I sheepishly admit I'll be watching. As will chemsis. We're suckers for canned plotlines and bad acting.

By chemgirlSeptember 2, 2008 - 8:15amEnough of the Carnival
Okay, so much of the PTA carnival in Wasilla. Back to the adults.
What if Obama/Biden refocused the country on the tasks ahead and named a cabinet, which challenged the GOP to try and find people who weren't BushCo or mobbed up lobbyists? If they couldn't find a VP, how can they match the depth of a Democratic cabinet?
We've gone from an adult discussion of the considerable challenges and the way to meet those challenges of Obama's speech at the convention to trailer park gossip at the Harper Valley PTA-- but it has to stop, the world is watching, and some of that world is not friendly.
