Today on The Lionel Show - Monday Septmeber 8th.
If you’re a devoted follower
of this blog, you need to go here.
I kid of course.
If you read my blog regularly,
you know that I struggle daily with the concept of a “liberal media elite”. I struggle
with it not because of a priori conclusions or brainless deference to Leftism,
but rather because I genuinely don’t see the evidence for it. If you’re talking
about blogs, then sure, I can see that there are some far-Left loonies writing
poorly thought-out, conspiracy-laden pieces of sensationalism designed to
undermine any and all conservative agendas. But these blogs surely have their
counterparts on the right; the internet is rife with racist screeds,
“Obama-is-a-Muslim” articles, and the like. In short, everybody’s crazy except
you and me, and you can go sit on an air hose for all I care.
When it comes to the
Mainstream Media, however, I do not see a liberal bias. In fact, 9 times out of
10, I get a decidedly conservative vibe from cable news and the network
heavyweights. Those on the right could not disagree more, or more loudly. When they tune in to CNN or ABC, they see a cardboard
cutout of Karl Marx reading the news, wearing an Obama ’08 pin on his breast.
How can I see one thing while
my friends on the right see the exact opposite? I’m no nut, nor am I a
cheerleader for The Left, so I feel reasonably secure in my abilities to
perceive bias in the way news is covered in this country. Yet there are people
on the right who think I’m absolutely nuts
for not seeing a liberal bias every time I turn on the TV (or, in my Luddite
existence, the radio).
As I usually do when I feel
that I’ve lost my spiritual compass, as I must do when I feel aimless and
without a guiding light, I turn the The Voice of the People in the Daily News. Here
in these brief pieces of correspondence from shut-ins and inarticulate ravers
all over NY, one can often locate the confusing, contradictory pulse of a
nation still struggling to define itself. To whit:

Never Accept Chocolate From A Proctologist
It really is amazing how differently news can be interpreted from one person to another. But it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise because most people just watch or listen to a particular station only to reinforce their preconceived notions. Lionel is one of the few people on the radio who actually looks at each issue critically and applies logic, rather than emotion or a party’s position, to a topic.
Keep up the good work, Lionel!

By saspoorSeptember 8, 2008 - 8:05amOK- 1) I am exhausted with
OK-
1) I am exhausted with Mika's INSANE hyperdefensiveness of Palin "on behalf of all women". She even went so far as to claim this morning that it was above Chuck Todd's "paygrade" to discuss working mothers. This Palin thing truly has become a cult of personality- disregarding any shread or shadow of policy.
2)- where's the chat room? Am I just blind, or is there no longer a link?

By zapfchanceSeptember 8, 2008 - 8:41amWhat if this is the real reason.........................
Currently Bush is the president on paper, but Cheney makes the decisions. What if Sarah Palin makes the decisons and John McCain is the president on paper only?
This makes sense!

By jointfitter1969September 8, 2008 - 8:27amBooks You Shouldn't Read in Alaska
The following is a list of books that Sarah Palin tried to get banned when she was mayor of Wasilla. I am not sure that Mark Twain, William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou and Geofrey Chaucer would be considered dangerous to children. Judy Blume give me a break. Harry Potter, who is kidding who. I also fail to see why Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary by the Merriam-Webster Editorial Staff should be banned.
This information is taken from the official minutes of the Wasilla Library Board.
When the librarian refused to ban the books, Palin tried to get her fired.

By jakepirateSeptember 8, 2008 - 8:36amNice, if it were true
As much as I would LOVE for this to be true- and I would LOVE even HALF of it to be true- It just isn't.
The list of books has never been released, at the request of the parties involved, both the librarian and Sarah Palin. All claims to the contrary have not been proven to be true. I received the same list (give or take a few titles) from a mass emailing this past weekend. It is just made up. Some of the books (the Harry Potters) weren't even published at the time of this attempted censorship (1996).

By EnemaSeptember 8, 2008 - 10:08amCommentary has become confused with journalism
We keep hearing that we are in an information economy. This couldn't b farther from the truth. We are flooded with information that has no value. What we have is an attention economy. There is rabid competition for people's eyeballs.

By jointfitter1969September 8, 2008 - 11:00amHow is it that the media
How is it that the media keeps repeating the story of McCain having to "carry his bags" and "fly coach" when his campaign hit snags last summer..
when he of course is too rich to fly coach...
and why does every commentator repeat that Sarah Palin was/is the most popular governor...
when nobody knew who she was ????
These little stories & details sound great...but come on....

Sarah Palin is just a distraction.
McCain would make a lousy president and they with the help of the media are trying to make us forget that with the repetitive chant of...
SARAH PALIN ! - SARAH PALIN ! - SARAH PALIN !
etc.

By R-A-WSeptember 8, 2008 - 1:12pmdefending against Palin
Lionel,
I was listening to your show today. I am new here so I don't know how this works - I don't know if you respond to bloggers. You raised the question, how does the opposition defend against Palin? It is my opinion that Democrats try too hard to base their arguments on facts. While this is a noble way to go it can be a losing proposition. First what is wrong with replaying the attack adds used on McCain in 2000. Hard for conservatives to say that is unfair as it is what got George Bush into the White House.
Specifically about Palin, I would replay some of her quips at the convention and then morph her into Bugs Bunny or some other cartoon character. Ask the people if they want a cartoon for VP. Once people see how void of ideas Sarah is they will have a tough time voting for McCain. If you want to win, you must not be afraid of the nastiness of politics. The Republicans get it and the Democrats many times do not.
