Doing Time at the Republican National Convention-Final Day

By Ron Kuby

OK.  I am officially scared.  Sarah Palin's speech did everything it was supposed to do.  Predictably light on specifics (solution for the economy--drill, solution for foreign affairs--kill), the "drill and kill" speech wowed 'em across the country.  Palin was poised, articulate, animated, and forceful.  I recognize that reading a speech that someone else wrote from a teleprompter is not exactly the Gettysburg address.  I know that it is not winning a debate, or answering questions from the press.  I realize that a single swallow doth not a summer make, etc.  But let's face it folks--she was good last nightSo some facts were wrong (well, many of them).  So she never mentioned the fact that she would ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.  She she bashed Michelle Obama by saying that Palin, at least, was "always proud of America," while omitting the fact that her husband spent 7 years registered to a political party that advocates Alaskan secession from the United States (also known as treason--google "Civil War").  These folks are not about content--they are about image.

Lighter moments included the really uncomfortable baby-dad Levi chewing gum on stage (he forget to put in under the seat), and Romney's weird timewarp speech where he seemed to forget that Republicans have completely dominated every branch of government for 6 of the past 8 years.  Also--one name not mentioned:  Bush

WHAT'S ANOTHER BILLION TO REPUBLICANS????

.
You want a real hoot? While Palin was talking about the difficulties in balancing a budget in a state that has so much money it pays it's citizens to live there, Bush was putting together another BILLION dollar package to send overseas to Georgia.

What Palin was talking about "cut taxes" and the Democrats "spend and spend", Bush was putting together another BILLION dollar package to send overseas to Georgia.

Can this be happening?

McCain says benefits for American troops are too "expensive", but supports sending 10 to 12 BILLION A MONTH to the fundamentalist Islamic government of Iraq who has decimated their Christian population by HALF since 2004. Look on the bright side. They couldn't have done it without our help.

one very scary hockey mom

Ron, I had a similiar reaction seeing Palin's performance last night.
I have to admit it was quite an impressive speech.
Obama and Biden are really going to be challenged to deal with this "pit bull with lip stick", but i am still confident they will be up to the task

This has been one hell of a political season, and it just was stepped up a big notch last night.

I'm glad you are on board to help break down the facts from the fiction.
Looking forward to hearing your take on this later this afternoon.

DOUBLE MURF

This whole "quite an impressive speech" thing has got to nipped in the bud here and now. It is akin to the McCain is a maverick myth.
That ole dog won't hunt. (and neither will she w/o her helicopter!)

Busted!

"This whole "quite an impressive speech" thing has got to nipped in the bud here and now."

I didn't think

That one actually posted I've been having serious problems all day.
Anywhoooo it gives me a chance to paraphrase what lefty redneck posted earlier.....
...she wasn't able to teach her daughter how to keep her boyfriends hockey stick out of her end of the ice!

I've said it before and I'll

I've said it before and I'll say it again, McCain's V.P. pick was a genius move. She doesn't use talk of reform to promote her career, she uses her career to promote reform.

Now it's 2 Washington insiders vs. a war hero maverick and a Washington outsider with a history of reform.

GAME ON!

McCain/Palin '08

Please outline this reform

Please outline this reform you speak of. To me, it sounded like same-old, same-old. Just because it came out of a forty-something female mouth did not make the words any different.

Sarah vs. Hillary

I agree, we all need to take a big breath and relax. There is a long way to go to the election and a lot of questions yet to be asked and answered.

Watching the fixation on Sarah Palin and her effect on the Republican base leads me to conclude that this election is now a battle between Obama and Palin. Her entrance has made McCain largely irrelevant, especially since his own voters are only lukewarm about him. Given that, anything Palin says against Obama and Biden is fair game while any comment made about her will immediately be labeled sexist. This being the case, the election gets thrown back to Hillary Clinton to win or lose. She is the really the only person who can legitimately go after Palin. And in so doing, she may be able to fully get her disaffected supporters on board with Obama. Perhaps in a twisted turn of fate, Palin will actually help to unite and galvanize the Democrats as well.

By the way, as a woman, I find the nomination of Sarah Palin unbelievably offensive. It is hard to stomach how little value women are accorded by the Republicans. I also am infuriated by the cry of "sexist" regarding every question or comment about Palin. When she stepped into the big league, she and everything about her became fair game for public consumption. If she is going to "whine" about the "sexist" media, she should go back to her small town in Alaska and run for the PTA.

So when libs say that she

So when libs say that she shouldn't run because she should be at home with her children, that's fair game and not at all sexist? I beg to differ.

One would think that after

One would think that after spending so much time on this board you, of all people, would realize that liberals are not homogeneous. In other words, we have different opinions. We don't have a hive mind, nor do we have a control central that gives us our thoughts for the day. So if ONE liberal says that, that does not mean ALL liberals believe it. In fact, being a liberal means that you think INDEPENDENTLY and that you do not have someone else tell you what your opinion is. That may be a novel concept for you, but it is the basis for all the freedoms you enjoy and that you think you are protecting.

double apologies

Sorry for the double post.
I guess I was banging on the keyboard in frustration earlier.

Justintyme and jakepirate you are right on the money with this.
Let's just take a deep breathe ....

Craig Charney has an excellent article in the NY Daily News today " To weaken Palin, Democrats must take her seriously "

" The keys are to focus on her idealogical extremism, not her inexperience, show her respect and have women lead the charge' ...

.I believe Hillary will be up to the task ...

Keep banging your head... it get worse....

38 million watched your President Nom. give his speech after a months long buildup. 37 million watched our VP Nom after a 3 day buildup. You guys are done.

"When in danger, when in doubt...run in circles....scream and shout".

Do My Ears Deceive Me?

Was I dreaming? Did I really see Chris Matthews rip into Pat Buchanan about the "evil and abusive" media accusations? Did our own Rachel Maddow just take down the Weekly Standard's spin boy? And Howard Feinman - Howie! - was so pissed off he could have spit about the way the McCain camp is pushing this abusive media notion!

Can it be that the press is really going to rock back off its' collective heels and fight back? Maybe there is hope yet that the press will actually bare its' constitutional teeth and demand answers to the questions that we voters have a right to ask.

And to the person who asked if it is fair game to suggest that she should be home with her children, my answer is yes. That doesn't mean I hold that position, but I believe that open debate is a good thing in any contest. Why are the republications so terribly afraid of people having opinions?
