Potshots: McCain's Acceptance Speech

Okay let's start with the whole "Country First" business and the "USA" chant. Why? It's the logic of the GOP, they might as well be chanting, "Ham and Cheese."
A gift from heaven: "I fell in love with my country when I
was a prisoner in someone else's." You were in your twenties, right? Isn't this the same thing Michelle Obama said about her love of country? Presumably if you fell in love at the Hanoi Hilton, you were hitherto not in love with America.....before that?
Patriot: He wants to reach out to us? "I know these are tough times..." That's how McCain began, and up goes the "USA" chant again. Why? Come now. It doesn't matter if things are tough. The "USA" chant is "the ground noise and the static." (His words.) Big cheer. Huzzah. The woes of our economy. "USA!" Fine. What does he intend to do about it? "Stand by our side." Great. I'd rather have him pay my bills.
And then comes the nonsequitur: Sarah Palin and her wondrous executive experience! Yay!!!
Here's another nonsequitur: John McCain is a kept man. Never made a dime. (Okay, he made a dime, and inherited some money but...)
"I will make them famous and you will know their names.... I fought lobbyists who stole from Indian reservations" Okay, great. I'll believe it when I get the frisbee you promised me the last time you ran for president, you old fuddy duddy. As for fighting lobbyists, you must do nothing but fight. Your campaign is run by them.
War talk. Let's talk about that. We have lost the war. Next! Or perhaps you are talking about another war? You are a fighter. Yes. Or perhaps (I know I repeat myself) you are looney?
"We are going to recover the people's trust...[we] are going to get back to basics." I like this. It totally rocks. So, if everyone has the opportunity to reach their "God given" potential, if you can do that Senator McCain, I will vote for you. Problem is your politics of choice is a euphemism for politics favoring rich people and ideologue wingnuts. You'll help folks so long as they don't need an education to realize their goals. You'll double the child tax refund because God wants more GOP children populating the world. Or am I missing something?
"We need to shake up failing school systems with competition." Okay, let's pretend I live in your warped world of sad clowns and pants-less balloon artists. Yech. All right: so I close my eyes and listen. Who are you? Come on, you know. Your John Bickerbutt McSame. This is Bush v. Board of Ed all over again.
And now for dessert, that old chestnut isolationism. John McCain says no more money for countries that don't like us. Drill baby drill. I feel it coming on. Yes, there it is!!! Drill baby drill! He pulls out the lading list of green power. Not. He wants to turn the world into a parking lot, folks! Or he'll do it for us, because he loves us so. You can't solve the energy crisis for SUV drivers and foster a healthy planet. Move on....
Ah jobs. Indeed, to discuss this we must talk about the war on terror and al-Qaeda. Here is the war on Iran. Russia is on his shopping list. It's manifest destiny!!! Yay again. Googleplex yay. I like Ike's warning about the military-industrial complex. Naomi Klein, you call this the Shock Doctrine, no? McCain says he's not afraid of our enemies or military issues, he's prepared for them. Are you kidding? He'll wither on the vine without these enemies and issues--they're the only things that can keep W's economy rolling.
Statement: "I hate war. It's terrible beyond imagination," and he will build "a stable and enduring peace." Okee doke. We know you have scars and stuff, which will make you better at diplomacy than Barack Obama. Got it. And I know I technically have to stop saying mean things about McNasty at this point because he's talking about the part of his life that is more or less off-limits. That said, PTSD does not a qualification to lead the free world make.
The "fight, fight, fight" part was so Jimmy Stewart! Wowza. God bless you, you old koot.

Here's the question to everyones answer.
If Hillary was the Presidential canidate, who do you think the Republicans would have told McCain to nominate as his VP more, Kwame Kilpatrick, or Marion Barry? Thats only since since Colin Powell wouldnt be seen within a hundred miles of them.Thats how un-impressed I am with their obvious VP choice. If we had the black canidate they have the gender card ready, if we had the woman canidate they undoubtively had the race card canidate ready. Rove 101. I think it devalues the canidate whomever McCain picked cause it proves they werent picked on their merits what-so-ever.

You fundamentalist, anti-education, creationist fascists can pretend that Palin is some quick-draw Queen of Policy while in fact Obama was IL state Senator 8 years then US for four...YOU'RE DELUDING YOURSELF.
WHICH IS GREAT. You retards can't even read the writing on the wall...you're so happy with the 5-year, 4000-soldiers dead, 3.5 TRILLION dollar war, happy with TORTURE, happy with the biggest corporate scandals in US history, the biggest foreclosure in US history - that you think that the 20-month governor the 3rd LEAST POPULATED state with <1% BLACK PEOPLE is going to win America?
I HOPE YOU DO...You must live in the 1950s!
Palin IS THE best candidate we could have EVER hoped for because she is in fact, so inexperienced - which you cannot see off of her script - why do you think she's waiting until Oct 2 - one whole month - to even debate Joe Biden? If her pit-bull lipstick is so smokin' - why not debate him tomorrow or next week?
Ah - because SHE HAS NO EXPERIENCE and it wil take 4 weeks to even prepare for that. Biden - (you know - the Chair of the SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE who has NO scandals under his belt) only has to not seem like the pro ball team crushing the high schoolers...what a fucking joke that will be!
SO THANKS YOU DUMBASS REPUBLICANS...you threw a big white (CAUCASIAN) funamentalist softball to us - and we're going to smash the fuck out of it!

By Redneck LeftistSeptember 5, 2008 - 12:05amI beg to differ on debates
As in Gore-Bush 2000, all the Repugnican candidate must do is show up and not drool on herself, or not declare North Korea free of tyrrany. Gore was light years ahead of Bush on preparation, but the expectations for him were so low (because everyone, even the Repugs, knew he was a moron even then) that he was considered to have won the debates because he did not humiliate himself.
Same will be true for Caribou Barbie. If Biden reaches a point where he cuts loose with one of his infamous volleys, he will be viewed as "beating up on a helpless mother of five." Meanwhile Palin can recite her prepared text with a twinkle in her eye, cast aspersions on Obama and Biden, while in the Spin Room the spin doctors from the Right will declare every point goes to the wife of an avowed seccessionist (I hear she's got preacher problems too but do we hear anyone on the right yelling about HER preacher? Or comments or positions by HER spouse? Nooooooooooooooo! It's okay! She's a Repugnican!).
I am reversing my opinion of last weekend. I think McSame and Caribou Barbie have a good shot at winning in November. Probably close enough that Diebold--run by a Right Winger--can successfully influence the outcome in the key precincts. Bet you duckpins to dollars that the exit polling does not match up with the so-called "results" again in 2008, and Gramps McSame and his wierdo hatchet lady will move into the White House and Naval Observatory, respectively.

"Gore was light years ahead of Bush on preparation, but the expectations for him were so low (because everyone, even the Repugs, knew he was a moron even then) that he was considered to have won the debates because he did not humiliate himself."
Here's where I sometimes think you lefties can't quite see the forest for the tree-huggers. Who wins has very little to do with who was prepared at the debates, who understands foreign policy better, who has more experience, who has the higher IQ, or even who presents a better platform. It has everything to do with whether or not the public perceives a particular candidate to be "one of us." George Bush did well not because of his rocket surgeon experience, but because he sounded like someone that you might bullshit with at the bar over a couple domestic beers.
Now, thus far, Obama has owned the "one of us" strategy. He speaks well to the public, talks in clear language without sounding awkward or uncomfortable (Gore, at least during the elections), and has a great story to share. Thus far McCain's strength has been his military experience and POW story (also a great one to share, although he's going to have to be careful not to overdo it). Bringing Palin onto the ticket had less to do with her being a female than it had to do with being "one of us." Did you notice how much easier it was for her to relate (and how much more comforatable she sounded) on the subject of the economy than it was for McCain? She doesn't own 8 houses and isn't married to a rich spouse. Her role is two-fold. First, she shores up support among some of the more social conservative base with her religious background and anti-abortion stands. And second, she adds quite a bit in the department of relating to the average american.
This is where Obama and Biden need to be very careful. Biden contributes very little to the ticket in the big picture. Obama already has a solid connection with the public (and that's what wins elections). If Biden comes across as too elitist (I know what's good for you even if you don't, or I'm better than some hick chick from Alaska) or Obama starts to lose that connection, you'll see the winds change quickly. If Obama can continue to nurture that wave of support, he'll win hands down.
That's my prediction.

Listen - points well taken.
But you are forgetting that there WERE NO BLACK OR LATINO PEOPLE at the all-caucasion RNC! Do you really imagine that any Obama supporters are this dumb - the numbers alone - nearly 4 to 5 times as many Dems voted IN THE PRIMARY than Reps.
And you're NOT dealing with idiots in Obama or Biden but some smart MF's how can throw a serious punch or a joke.
There is nothing REMOTELY similar about Hillary and Palin - the latter being an anti-abortion, creationist, Christian Fundamentalist and if Obama and Biden remain focused on teh fact that the Supreme Court will be 100% STACKED with Rep judges, that alone is going to have the ladies in the right court.
My 40-year MILITARY, near-fundamentalist parents just switched to Dem to vote for Obama and said McCains' speech sound JUST LIKE OBAMA so why would they bother to vote for more Reps after 8 years of this crap?
You're watching the Pep Rally...its DESIGNED to make you think 'Oh, this is gonna be reeeeeeel tight". COME THE HELL ON - McCain 100% co-opted Obama's longtime message of Hope & Change last night as if he invented it - and didn't even MENTION immigration which he didn't go one day without talking about in the primary.
Do you imagine for 10 seconds thats going to float for office 08? NEVER. McCain & Palin are as awkward on their feet and bizarre in appearance (aka - is she his daughter???) as O'Reilly and Al Franken TOGETHER. It has no chance and I can only say - BRING IT ON YOU REP ASSHOLES...YOUR SHIT IS GOING DOWN LIKE THIS ECONOMY AND NATION HAS UNDER YOUR "LEADERSHIP"

I don't believe Obama or Biden are idiots. I just don't think the strategists on the left have quite wrapped their brains around certain concepts (particularly that of trust in a political candidate, and how to sell that). Or maybe they get it, but haven't quite mastered how to field a candidate that the lefty base will vote for in a primary that they can still market to the more centered mainstream (think Lamont/Lieberman).
I don't believe I ever said anything about Palin and Hillary. As a matter of fact I think I made a case for Palin's inclusion on the Republican ticket that had little to do with her being a female or any thinly veiled attempt to pick up the disgruntled Hillary voters (How 'bout it Huff, gonna vote for McCain now?).
As for the Court being stacked with right leaning judges, that is just as good a selling point for McCain as it is for Obama. Every church, pro-life group, and righty hangout in the US is going to mobilize as many as they can to get out and vote for McCain for exactly that reason. And you're as foolish as those that believe the Hillary supporters will vote for Palin because of her sex if you think that every woman is pro-choice and will automatically vote for Obama.
Of course the convention is designed to get the base pumped up. And 4 months ago I would have agreed that the beating Obama would hand out would be uglier than that of a Liza Manelli drag queen that pinched the ass of a guy named Bub in a Wyoming country bar. But look at the polls. Obama is leading McCain by a bit. Let's just say though that Obama starts to lose his monopoly of identifying with the common man, and Biden is seen as attacking a sweet hockey mom. And you know damn well that as mentioned previously every fundy christian group around is going to be dragging grandma and her oxygen tank out of the nursing home. All of a sudden you've got a tough situation on your hands.
Right now, I do think Obama will win. But it's closer that I would have guessed (I mean Christ, it should have been a matter of holding a mirror up to make sure a democrat was breathing to ensure a victory over the party of Bush). And a few good or bad moves by either candidate could change things significantly.

Who would have ever thought that the Republican Party would actually co-opt the Democratic message of radical change against the most extreme and fascist government in recent US history (Bush).
If this wasn't a CONFIRMATION of the Democrats ideas - THEN NOTHING IS.
Absolutely amazing! He gave the best support for the Democratic platform while attempting to make America think the Republicans invented it. If the Dems are wildly against Bush, and McCain also is...what is then the reason to vote for McCain when we know he's in the very same party he claims to be so adamantly against?
Vampire MUST be in charge of the bloodbank on this one! What possible avenue other than mimicking the Dem message of Change / Change / Change do they have? Its absolutely amazing...and the best backup we could've asked for.

By Kill-WhiteySeptember 5, 2008 - 9:36amOnce again, whitey, I have to point out that you were not there.
After Monday night most of the people who were out to damage property or provoke the police were gone. But the police continued to harass protestors, bystanders, and journalists over the next three days. There was the Poor People's March that ended up being tear gassed and bombed with stun grenades on Tuesday because without warning the police barricaded the route. On Wednesday night they surrounded the crowd who were exiting the Rage Against The Machine concert and arrested twenty. On Thursday a lot of people were so fed up with their actions that they marched after their permit had expired. The point being that having a permit didn't matter anyway because the city government was doing whatever the fuck it liked. So a couple hundred more were arrested.
As to why the protests were more intense at the RNC than at the DNC- well the democrats were the accomplices to the war crime which is the occupation of Iraq, but a republican administration was actually guilty of committing the crime.

And again, I don't disagree that the vast majority of protestors have been good people. And that the media is being very selective in what is shown (although I may disagree about the why of that). But my point is that you didn't see righties at the DNC doing any damage, or trying to charge the stage during Obama's speech with their ridiculous shirt. This is behavior that my 6 year old has been able to get past.
Many on the right believe that those on the left want to murder babies (and I'm not debating abortion, just making a point here). They believe that Democrats are guilty of committing crimes. But those folks didn't travel to Denver to raise hell at the DNC.
Listen, I'm not saying the police have treated everyone fairly, or that people should be denied their rights. I just think it's very interesting that you don't see righty activists exhibiting as much of that kind of behavior as those on the left. Most of us find the thought of making that kind of public spectacle of ourselves apalling.

She pulls out a lipstick and puts some on by looking in the mirror which reflects back a pit bull putting lipstick on. She smiles. The camera pulls back to show that the Maverick has been pimped. The mom gets in backwards making sure she won't get shot at and the perimeter is safe. She gets in tosses a hand grenade out the window blowing up the gas station as she peels away, driving off into the sunset---a voice says-
"No matter who is driving and what you do to it...It is still the same old Maverick."

By sharkboy22September 5, 2008 - 10:58amOld John McCain's Acceptance Speech
I find it odd that about a third of the way through his acceptance speech at the RNC, John McCain said:
"…from the boy whose descendants arrived on the Mayflower to the Latina daughter of migrant workers, we’re all God’s children and we’re all Americans!"
And the idiot "congregation" cheered!
How stupid are Republicans?
Neither a long dead British boy nor an illegal emigrant kid are Americans!
How this strange a statement could get into a speech of that importance says volumes about John McCain, his speech writers, and, by inference, the level of his advisers.
you can see this, along with a lot more otherwise meaningless drivel, on YouTube, Part 2 of his speech.
My point, of course, is that he didn't say "ancestors."
He said "....the boy whose descendants arrived....."
And he didn't catch it.
His staff didn't catch it.
And, a few thousand Republicans didn't catch it.
They cheered wildly, while all over the country people like me said, "wait a minute, that mythical boy probably died in England about four hundred years ago!"
Well all due respect, the sentence DID NOT make sense!
I worries me that this old coot wants to run the country.

By Bill HopkinsSeptember 5, 2008 - 3:36pmAre you kidding? They don't
Are you kidding? They don't have a clue as to what McCain actually said. They're cheering because a Republican said it. He could have been reading Green Eggs and Ham, and they would have thought it to be the most clever and original political speech ever.

By nonexistent manSeptember 7, 2008 - 2:24pmYou know, there really ARE green eggs!
I almost fell over when I first saw one in person at Shelbourne Farms!
Yes, it's true... and it makes evolutionary sense (for those non-creationists among us... and the non-cretinous) that wild-strain genes in chickens would survive because the eggs are better camouflaged from preditors.
This is no gag! I promise. This green egg is shown in its natural color... No photoshop, no dye.

By A GSeptember 7, 2008 - 3:11pmMcCain's speech had more
McCain's speech had more viewers than Oblahma's, hell, even Palin had nearly as many as Oblahma. Oh, and McCain was up against the NFL's opening day. What was Oblahma up against, a Friends rerun??

By f u bush2September 6, 2008 - 2:15amAnd that means WHAT, exactly?
Jet-go-Splat McJukebox's speech got good ratings because it rode the coattails of the NFL season opener. Big deal. He could have gotten even better ratings if he'd been on immediately after a NASCAR race (but only if Earnhardt won).
And even with those "wonderful ratings", he's STILL behind in the polls, and losing ground! He can't even carry his home state!

By nonexistent manSeptember 6, 2008 - 5:42amHmmm...
Maybe McCain/Earnhardt Sr. would have been a better ticket. Just dig up old Dale and let the two Crash Kings go at it!
